Scott Henson Architect LLC‘s expertise is in the preservation and restoration of historic buildings. Our approach to preservation architecture is sensitive to the history of structures while pragmatic about their present needs to ensure that these buildings remain active contributors to our urban fabric.

Our practice directs this proficiency in materials toward preserving the historical character and architectural significance of the buildings under our care. We have experience on over 100 historic buildings in and around New York City, many of them city landmarks.

Scott Henson Architect LLC assists building owners in diagnosing and remedying the myriad of building envelope issues that can plague new and historic buildings alike. As buildings age, the components which make up their exterior are exposed to repeated thermal changes, wind, rain, and structural settlement and can be some of the first elements of a building to fail. We provide our clients with a clear diagnosis, and work closely with them to develop strategic, economically responsible recommendations for the immediate and long term repair of their buildings.

Scott Henson Architect LLC provides design and consulting services for both new and replacement roofing systems including historic roofs, green roofs, balconies and terraces, parking decks, and skylights. We begin each project with an assessment, evaluation and analysis of the existing or proposed roof layout and use our extensive knowledge of both new and historic roofing systems to determine the optimal solution for the unique conditions faced by each building.  We provide our clients with full construction documents and specifications as well as cost estimates and assist in construction contract procurement and administration.

Window and Door Replacement

Scott Henson Architect LLC provides door and window replacement services for clients seeking to improve the energy performance or appearance of their building. We begin by assessing and evaluating existing windows and provide replacement strategy recommendations appropriate to meet the energy efficiency and aesthetic goals of our clients. For property owners of historic or landmark structures we assist in obtaining appropriate city and community board approvals and in detailing and replication of wood, steel, stained glass and curved historic windows.

Vault and Foundation Reconstruction and Waterproofing

Scott Henson Architect LLC provides vault and foundation design services and has extensive knowledge in detailing the unique waterproofing and structural conditions they present.  We assist clients in leak investigation and remediation, coordination of repairs with utility companies and city agencies, waterproofing and drainage design, and structural or settlement repairs. We provide complete construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates as well as assist in construction contract procurement and administration services. 

Adaptive Reuse of Existing Buildings

Scott Henson Architect LLC views the preservation and adaptive re-use of older and historic buildings as an effective tool for the sustainable stewardship of our environmental resources, including those resources that have already been expended in the construction of those buildings.  We assist property owners in assessing their existing structures as well as their proposed program and provide code compliance analysis, zoning and feasibility studies, building use type studies and cost estimates.
