APT Montreal – Total Carbon Impact Workroom

What a wonderful APT / National Trust for Canada joint conference this year! Among all the other highlights was the full-day “Total Carbon Impact” workroom, organized by the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP) and APT’s Technical Committee on Sustainable Preservation (TCSP).

We toured the Biodome, which is a magnificent adaptive reuse of the 1976 Olympic Velodrome. The architect of the new design, Rami Bebawi, gave an introductory presentation, and then we explored the multiple, immersive ecosystems, complete with beavers, otters, sturgeons, and sloths!

Lori Ferriss used the Biodome as a case study in her excellent hands-on training for putting decarbonization tools and strategies into practice. Workroom participants shared a summary scan of carbon policies in various cities; the Henson team provided the NYC update. It was inspiring to see the wide range of initiatives emerging, including for deconstruction and salvage as well as LL97-style Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) across North America.
